Welcome to Bulletin #40

Here we are… the penultimate bulletin of this school year. The Summer break is very nearly upon us and we’re all ready for it. There are a few things to wrap up. Years 5 and 6 are having their Sports Day as I write –  I’ll get out as soon as I finish this job! – reports go out today, the annual survey is ‘live’, the cinema trip is booked for next Tuesday and next week is transition week, Significantly, our Year 6 have their leavers assembly on Monday, which is always a very emotional event. We’ll be finishing with a picnic on the field a week today.

Having mentioned the survey, we’d really urge –  beg even! – people to complete it. It shouldn’t take more than a few minutes and it is much, much shorter and simpler than previous ones. Even if your views are very neutral, there are options to choose that; neutral is an opinion!

This week also saw the annual stress-fest of the release of Key Stage 2 SAT results. Sleepless nights, a slight nauseous anxiety in the run-up, weird dreams, mostly about falling off cliffs… However, as ever our children have done themselves and us proud. For the 12th consecutive year, we remain well above national averages on all measures. Again, a cohort severely affected by 18 months of Covid-related disruption have come through almost at pre-Covid levels. We have absolutely not experienced the national drop in outcomes, quite catastrophic for most, in any post-Covid year.  Looking back, we must’ve at least done something right back in those crazy times. And so must the children and their families. Well done everyone! Looking back through our data about each child’s engagement and home learning offer then, it is very clear that those who did most have had their results hold up best. Having the ipads available from day one of the first lockdown was handy – a stroke of luck or great planning? 😉

For the first time along with your child’s report, we have reported on ourselves. We’ve tried to be honest and reflective and recognise things we want to do better. It’s a long report (there is a summary), but we’d ask you to have a look through before doing the survey. We’d also love to know how you feel about the new report format for the children. Having read each and every one of 469,my humble opinion is that they are more relevant and personalised than ever before. I’ve enjoyed ploughing through them much more! The word that crops up most often, for nearly every child, is kind and respectful. That’s very reassuring.

Wishing everyone a lovely time in what looks set to be a blisteringly hot weekend. Stay cool, stay safe…
