Intent and Overview

Our intent at Parkdale is that every child has the opportunity to enjoy a wide and diverse range of experiences beyond the classroom. We aim to engage children and provide opprtunities to develop positive values and character.
We thought this was particularly important during the recent Covid pandemic and our home-learning offer included a great amount of enrichment and wellbeing. For example, we even managed to produce a collaborative musical extravaganza (Proud!) whilst we were totally closed and tied this in with a menu of fun, character-building activities. We also provided weekly enriching challenges to encourage children out intotheir gardens and to do fun things with their families.

We operate both our own enrichment programme and that of the Transform Trust as a global offer:

‘Fifty Things To Do Before You Leave Parkdale’ is a list of 50 activities, drawn from a variety of sources, that we think children should experience as part of a rounded childhood. This is a mix of relatively simple, traditional activities such as board games, playing conkers, making a paper aeroplane… and some important cultural capital and ‘Nottingham’ experiences such as visiting the castle, taking a selfie by the Left Lion and other local ‘specialities’.

The Transform Enrichment Diploma, known as TED, is a programme of enrichment activities, organised phase by phase and which leads to an award for completion. The content is currently under review and at Parkdale we are looking to integrate TED with 50 Things.

TIme is built into the school calendar to allocate enrichment time and children keep a ‘passport’ or record of achievement.

We also offer a range of enrichment clubs, after school and at dinner times: Each year group has its own ‘multi-sports club’ and all can access this for at least one term of each year.

Additionally, we offer a range of specialist sports clubs such as football training, cricket and table tennis, all of which we compete in at a high standard.

Other clubs are offered in arts and crafts, along with chess, choir, guitar, ”rock band’ and more besides. We have an Eco club and Young Gardeners too.

Post-Covid, we are currently rebuilding our offer as and when we can and as coaches and other providers become available again.

We participate in a wide range of sporting and cultural events. In a typical year, we: field football teams in the Gedling PSFA League, cup and Notts PSFA County Cups, both boys and girls, as well as playing more inclusive ‘friendlies’; we field teams in the Nottingham and DIstrict Table Tennis League; participate in Sportshall Athletics’ Swimming Gala, Tag Rugby Festivals, Cross Country, Kwik Cricket and more. This year, we are trying to build up to play county-standard ‘hardball’ cricket for the first time.

Within school, we run inter-house sports competitions at dinner times.

We always have Sports Days, which are very popular and well-attended – a traditional, competitive one for each Key Stage and a ‘Potted’ Sports Day. Every child particpates.

Our choir would normally attend ‘Young Voices’ and sing at a number of events in the community.

Our children also enjoy a wide range of educational visits, trips and visiting workshops throughout the year. Residential visits, either to a National Park or an adventure activity centre, are offered to all in both Years 5 and 6.

We always get fully involved in national action and celebration days such as Comic Relief, Sports Relief, National Poetry Week, Show Racism The Red Card Day and more besides.

All in all, there’s a lot going on!
