We are changing the way we move our children into new classes at the end of the year. Over recent years, educators have become increasingly aware of the importance of this transition time, which has traditionally only really been fully considered coming into school and going out of it.
A well–planned, meaningful transition can help reduce pupil anxiety, learning loss and a make for a smoother all-round start in September. If you are particularly interested in this, there is a model – based on extensive meta studies – here at the Education Endowment Foundation. This will form the basis of our plans.
In a nutshell, we will be looking to move to a two-week transition model. We have observed this in action in other schools and it appears to work well for the children. This year, diaries are already set with some immovable events, so we will launch with a one week model. In the final week of the Summer term, children will say goodbye to their current class teacher and classroom and move into their new one. Naturally, it will be hugely important that children are here for this important phase which will include checks on needs, identifying gaps, setting expectations, introducing new systems, rounding off topics, preparing for new ones and – most importantly – getting to know one another and establishing positive relationships.
We will share more details in due course, but please for now note the week- w/b the 14th July
