We have lots of very active, sporty children in school. One thing we’ve observed recently though is that many do not have good throwing technique, even by years 5 and 6. We’re working on this, but thought we’d share a resource to encourage practice out of school. All you need is a ball – tennis ball sized – and some throwing space. It might be fun in the park on a nice day, especially if you have a dog to retrieve the ball for you!

Firstly, looking at underarm throwing, many of the children step with the incorrect foot. This video demonstrates nicely

Overarm, the technique we want to develop is the crow-hop. It’s very simple and this video breaks it down into nice chunks. You can ignore the need for a baseball catcher’s mitt!

We’ve checked it out and generally the norm worldwide is for an average five year old to be able to throw about 5 metres, increasing to 20 for a ten year old.

We’d love to see any ‘before and ‘after’ photos or videos. House points available to reward good effort! Please feel free to share with either Mrs Rippon and/or Mr Hillier
