As the situation in Ukraine worsens, we would like to give our school community the chance to show support for people there, children included of course, who are suffering unimaginable hardship: People are losing their homes and lives; families are being separated. Essential services, like water and healthcare, are under threat. There is also a growing refugee crisis with hundreds of thousands of people on the move towards neighbouiring countries such as Poland.
On Friday, we would like to invite children (and adults) to wear the national colours of Ukraine, blue and yellow, as much or little as you like, to show their humanitarian support. It is a small gesture, but it sends a message, particularly to those affected in our city, which has a well established Ukrainian community. We know of families in our school with relatives and friends in Kyiv and other cities in Ukraine. This is a non-political show of humanitarian support for civilians who are suffering the effects of military action.
On a practical level, the British Red Cross are co-ordinating a Crisis Appeal campaign, which we encourage you to donate to. The minimum donation is £2 via this link.
